Alex Smith, DO
Dr. K. Alex Smith has been LifeServe Blood Center’s Medical Director since 2015.
Originally from St. Louis, Missouri, Dr. Smith served four years in the United States Navy after high school. He completed a B.A. in Psychology from Washington University in St. Louis, medical school at A.T. Still University, Clinical Pathology residency at Summa Health/NEOMED, and Blood Banking/Transfusion Medicine fellowship at the University of Iowa. He is currently board certified in Clinical Pathology and Blood Banking/Transfusion Medicine.
At LifeServe Blood Center, Dr. Smith oversees all aspects of blood donation, product testing, therapeutic apheresis, and cellular therapy. He also provides education and consultation on transfusion-related topics.
When not spending time with his family, Dr. Smith enjoys community service and advocacy work. He serves on the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Iowa’s Advocacy Committee and was elected to the Waukee School District board in 2019.
